Oral Yeast Infection
Thrush is an oral yeast infection in the mouth of either infants and adults which is caused by Candida albicans. Thrush can make it difficult to eat and drink and it can be very painful. In view of the serious risk of dehydration, any child who doesnt drink liquids for 12 hours should be taken to the doctor. The same applies to elderly adults.
In appearance, look for a thick white pasty film coating in patches on the tongue or palate or anywhere inside the mouth. When you scrape away the white patches, the area underneath will be red and may bleed. Occasionally, the white coating will be absent and all you see if the reddened tongue.
Contracting a yeast infection in the throat is rather rare and it is usually a consequence of a compromised immune system.
Who is at highest risk of oral yeast infection? Newborn babies, adult denture users, and people with endocrine disorders such as diabetes or hypothyroidism.
In AIDS patients, a serious infection that is similar to thrust (called esophagitis) may form in the upper digestive tract and extend down from the mouth into the esophagus and stomach. Anyone with a compromised immune system must see a doctor immediately if they see the symptoms of an oral yeast infection.
Treatment of Oral Yeast Infection
The first step is to get rid of the yeast, and doctors usually do this by prescribing antifungal medication.
Some oral yeast infections require no medical treatment at all, says the Mayo Clinic, because they go away on their own. For instance, healthy toddlers may get thrush after being treated with antibiotics. Start your youngster on natural (unsweetened) yogurt to help rebuild his or her supply of beneficial bacteria.
Healthy adults can also benefit from acidophilus yogurt.
The second step in treating oral yeast infections is to address the possible causes. For example, a high-sugar diet is known to cause oral yeast infections. Fungus-infected dentures will need to be treated to destroy the fungus. Poorly-fitting dentures can be replaced or repaired. Diabetes patients should check if a change in their diabetic medications is needed.
