What Causes Body Hair Loss
Hair loss can deliver a devastating blow to a man’s self-esteem. Nearly half of all American men will experience hair loss in their lifetimes. As that happens, men begin looking at ways to prevent further hair loss and to stimulate new hair growth. In order to accommodate this quest, men need to understand two basic things: first, the life cycle of hair and second the causes of hair loss.
The life cycle of hair is the same as the life cycle of any living organism. Hair is born out of the root or follicle; it grows (sometimes as long as five years); it rests and then it dies and falls out. The death of the hair stimulates the growth of a new hair from that follicle or root. The good news is that not all hair is in the same growth stage at the same time. So it is perfectly normal to lose up to 100 hairs per day. It is all apart of the process.
So why then does some hair not re-grow? There are a lot of reasons that hair does not re-grow, some of them are temporary, and others are permanent. The most common causes are poor circulation, stress, hormonal changes, nutrition and genetics. Prevention techniques and early intervention is effective for most causes of hair loss. However, if the hair loss is genetic, prevention and early intervention are not applicable.
Stress is a common cause of hair loss. Everyone has stress, but certain conditions and events can cause extreme stress. When that happens the body reacts dramatically. Stress-related hair loss becomes noticeable two to three months after the stress has occurred. This is because stress causes the body to pull back all the nutrients from the hair and follicle to use for fuel and maintenance of the vital organs. This in turn results in large quantities of hair suddenly plunging into the rest and shed stage. Fortunately, stress-related hair loss is temporary. Once the stressful situation has been alleviated, normal hair growth returns, usually within six to eight months. Men who find themselves under a lot of stress, and can pull hands full of hair from their head, should take a regime of B-complex vitamins as early in the stressful situation as possible. B vitamins can be effective in returning nutrients to the hair and follicle during times of stress.
Healthy hair and scalp are totally dependent on a balanced diet and proper nutrition. Healthy hair and healthy bodies need adequate protein, vitamins, and minerals. For this reason, fad diets, or diets that eliminate all carbohydrates or require you to eat from only one food group, throw your body out of balance. The body interprets this as stress and again, pulls all the nutrients from non life-supporting systems in order to fuel and maintain the vital organs. We’ve all heard it: Eat sensibly, exercise regularly, and get regular checkups. No matter how many times we hear it—it is still true. A good diet and regular exercise helps to prevent heart disease and hair loss.
While not hair loss is preventable, most men can benefit by taking a good multi-vitamin and mineral supplement and having regular checkups.
